Deputy Head of Year
We have five Deputy Heads of Year at Kingswood (see table above).
What is a Deputy Head of Year?
Deputy Heads of Year work with pupils to help them address barriers to learning. They bridge academic and pastoral support roles with the aim of ensuring that individual pupils engage more effectively in learning appropriately. Pupils of all ability levels can achieve, and Deputy Heads of Year target these pupils and help them identify and address what it is that gets in the way of their learning. These barriers can be wide ranging and often very personal to the individual pupil.
What is the purpose of Deputy Heads of Year?
The purpose of Deputy Heads of Year is to assist with:
- Social, emotional and behavioural problems
- Pupils experiencing organisational difficulties
- Pupils who need support with study skills/coursework
- Planning/revision/examination techniques
What do Deputy Heads of Year actually do?
The primary foci of Deputy Heads of Year :
- Developing coping strategies
- Small group work
- Raising aspirations
- Enhancing motivation
- Encouraging re-engagement in learning
Deputy Heads of Year will take into account the range of complex underlying issues that may impact negatively on learning and achievement. For example:
- Lack of confidence
- Low self-esteem
- Mental/Health issues
- Relationship difficulties
- Bullying
- Peer pressure
- Family issues/concerns

Emotional well being
More broadly, Deputy Heads of Year work in a multi-agency or professional context, through the CAF (common assessment framework) process. They have a significant role in helping schools address the five key outcomes of Every Child Matters.
Attendance Management
Our Attendance Management team monitor attendance and pastoral issues. They are the first point of contact for parents regarding attendance issues.
Attendance Administrator - Responsible for Years 7, 8 and 9 girls
Attendance Officer - Responsible for Year 9 boys and Years 10 and 11
Prospects
The Prospects (previously Connexions) team at Kingswood work closely with pupils during various sessions, particularly with Year 11 to guide them through choosing the right career path. For more information click here.
